Ohio: Yesterday and Today was created in response
to the Ohio Department of Education recommendation that Ohio
Studies be taught in the fourth grade. It is designed to prepare
students for the fourth grade Ohio Proficiency Test in Citizenship.
Since fourth grade students have little or no
background in history, each chapter of
Ohio: Yesterday and Today begins with a timeline
- in a variety of styles - to relate events to be covered to
what was happening in other places.
Ohio: Yesterday and Today is far more than a
series of vignettes followed by quizzes. It is far more than
a collection of pictures and brief quotations. It integrates
causes, effects, and people into a colorful, readable history

book. The principles of geology, geography, economics, and
world events are used to make students aware of how the things
they experience today are results of what other people did in
the past.
Ohio: Yesterday and Today explains how various
people and cultures influenced the development of our state.
Chapters 1 through 6 emphasize the impact of white settlers on
the Native Americans. Chapter 7 through 11 explain how problems
in Europe affected the development of Ohio during the 19th century.
Chapters 12 through 15 describe the role of world turmoil in
encouraging people of Asia to migrate to Ohio during the 20th
century.
